M. G. Crouch Lumber Company History
Founded in 1915 by Marshall G. Crouch as Crouch Cabinet Company in Hickory, the company began as a woodworking shop on 10th Avenue. After a fire in 1916 the shop was moved to Water Avenue, and relocated again in 1934 to its present location on Highland Avenue, where it was the second plant in the Hickory area to make extensive use of electricity.
Although early products included cabinets and carpentry, the company was soon building homes in the Four County Area, which it continued for 60 years until 1982. Although M. G. Crouch Lumber Company has not built homes for over twenty years, the quality and craftsmanship is still recognized today in the local real estate market where homes for sale are advertised as a "Crouch house."
After M. G. Crouch's death in 1944, the company was run for many years
by his son and daughter, Conrad Crouch and Bobbie Landis. Ownership passed
to Conrad's three children, who then sold the company in 2007 to David
Bumgarner, a neighbor, Long-time employees are
still working at the company, providing skills and knowledge accumulted
over time. For years M. G. Crouch Lumber Company has been known as one
of the premiere home builders in western North Carolina. Though the company
no longer constructs homes, its reputation for quality and sound construction
is still recognized.
